WHAT IT IS

Closed-cell polyethylene backer rod is a compressible foam cylinder placed in expansion joints, construction joints, and facade joints before sealant application in Malaysian construction. Available in diameters from 6 mm to 35 mm and above, supplied per metre or in rolls, the rod is sized approximately 25–33% larger than the joint width for a compression fit. It controls sealant depth to achieve the correct width-to-depth ratio, prevents three-sided bonding of the sealant, and supports the sealant during cure — ensuring optimum flexibility and service life of joint sealants used in facades, floors, and structural joints. Suitable for use with silicone, polyurethane, and polysulfide sealants. Also known as rod sandaran PE, joint backer rod, and 泡沫背衬棒.
